So as I've been blog hopping I've read a lot about "common core standards." I had no idea what these were, looked it up and figured out that basically every other state has adopted the same standards except for Texas. Well, I thought it was a little funny because of course Texas would be one of the only ones to not do what everyone else is doing. We like to think we're still our own country I guess... :)
Anyways, I loved some of the common core standards cards I saw online. Really cute graphics and great for goal setting with your students. This aligns perfectly with what I've been reading in The Leader in Me. This year I plan on having one student be the "goal keeper." His or her job is to read aloud our learning goals for the day. I thought it would be easy and organized to just write the number of the standard (in Texas we call them TEKS) and let the student find the card, put it up and read it during morning meeting. That way it gives them leadership in the classroom, direction for the day and some accountability for their learning.
The only problem with this idea was...I don't have the cards made! Luckily, I've been inspired by many fabulous teachers so I had the drive to create my own now, instead of waiting until the last minute and creating a few at a time. I just finished working on the reading set. I'll make cards for math, writing, science and social studies as well. I created two sets for reading: one with just the text and border and the other with the text, border and a cute ocean graphic.
If you're a Texas teacher, check them out! I'm in second but if you need a different grade level, let me know and I can make them and post at a later date.
Smiles!
Hi, Dixie. I just found your blog, and I'm your newest follower. I have taught third grade for 14 years, and will be moving to second grade next year. I'm really excited!

Nice to meet you Rebecca! I taught kinder for three years then moved to second last year. I love second and I'm so excited to teach it again this year. Now that I know the standards better I'm spending time creating activities this summer. We go back in July (I teach year round) so I'll be sure to share all I do and make here. Thanks for following! :)
DeleteWe go back in July too. We are on an "alternate schedule". We aren't "true" year round because we still have 8 weeks off in summer but during the school year, we go 9 weeks on, 2 weeks off. I LOVE it! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I will be doing Daily 5 for the first time this coming year. When I was reading the book, I was thinking, "oh, this goes with my brain-based teaching". I'm so thrilled!
ReplyDeleteThose look very cute! I am a Texas teacher too!
ReplyDeleteI am happy to be your newest follower. I would love for you to come and visit me when you get the chance. =)
You have a very cute blog! =)

These are really cute!
ReplyDeleteHow do you like year round school? I think I would like it a lot---summer gets a little too long for me and I would love the breaks spread out.
By the way--Love your blog.

2nd Grade Ponderings
Hey Dixie - I just purchased the $10 interactive social studies part 2 last night and I did look at the preview - but I am wondering if there was a curriculum to go with these pages? I surely hope I didn't purchase something that was only for Texas teachers - because I do like what you have - but just need to know how to teach it - or where the instructions for how to pace it - lesson plans?
ReplyDeleteHi! I replied to you on TPT. The notebook is for Texas standards but not for any specific curriculum, it's meant as a supplement. I posted that information in the description on TPT. If you aren't able to use it maybe you can ask TPT to refund you?? I hope that helps!
